Centre Belge de la Bande Dessinée - Bruxelles
This fine Art Nouveau building was built between 1903 and 1906, according to a design by the Belgian architect Victor Horta. At first the building was used to store tissues, saved from demolition in 1989 and converted into a museum dedicated to comic strips: the Cébébédé (CBBD).
The museum pays homage to the Belgian passion for comic strips, housing more than 6000 original drawings, from simple sketches to final editing. Also, it plays host to a permanent exhibition dedicated to one of the most popular Belgian cartoons: the Smurfs, who first appeared in 1958 in the magazine Spirou. In the ’80s this cartoon reached the apex of popularity. Another famous Belgian animated cartoon, Tintin, is also celebrated in the exhibition, created in 1929 and turned into a colour cartoon in the early ’90s.
